Waterbury just made national headlines, and not for a good reason. A new report has ranked it the worst city in the country for drivers, and the data behind that ranking points to a serious problem with impaired driving specifically. Waterbury Just Topped the Nation’s Worst Drivers List
A new report from The ConsumerAffairs Journal of Consumer Research analyzed 338 U.S. cities with populations of at least 100,000, evaluating fatal crashes tied to aggressive, careless, reckless, and wrong-way driving, along with speeding, driving under the influence, positive blood alcohol content, and driver inexperience, using National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash data. Out of every city studied, Waterbury scored a 20 out of 20, placing it at number one.

The ranking was not close. Waterbury was the only city to rank number one in two separate metrics: it has the highest number of deaths involving DUIs in the country, at 9.5 per 100,000 residents, and the highest rate of fatalities involving a positive blood alcohol content reading, at 8.7 per 100,000 residents. It is also the only Northeastern city among the 45 worst-ranked cities nationwide, and the jump was fast, climbing from 134th place in 2023 to first in 2026.
How Waterbury Compares to the Rest of Connecticut
Memphis, Tennessee took the runner-up spot, followed by Baton Rouge, North Charleston, and Odessa. Other Connecticut cities included in the report were Hartford at number 46, Bridgeport at number 157, and Stamford at number 220, which puts Waterbury well ahead of the rest of the state on this particular measure.
What Waterbury Is Doing About It
A Waterbury Police Department spokesperson said the department is increasing DUI enforcement and installing 19 speed and red-light cameras at particularly troublesome locations, with the goal of getting drivers to slow down and think twice before driving recklessly. The city is also part of a regional safety effort called NVision Zero, aiming to eliminate serious and fatal crashes by 2060 through improved street design and safer driving behavior.
